What is Craniosacral Therapy?
by , October 28, 2011
Craniosacral Therapy is not easily described. Although there is a lot of literature about theory and anecdotal evidence, there isn’t much evidence-based research because the movements and rhythms are subtle and not easily measured.
Everyone knows that joints in the body move or can be moved passively. For example, spinal manipulation restores a movement called “joint play” that every joint in the body must have in order to work efficiently. The amount of movement in a single vertebral joint is very small, yet when all those little joints in the 24 vertebra in our spines each add their little bit of motion, we can bend over.
The bones in our head have joints too. These joints move in very complex ways as each bone in the head is a different shape. The motion available at these joints is incredibly tiny. Yet we believe that this motion must be there in order for the brain and the soft tissues/nerves/muscles of the head to be healthy.
Craniosacral therapy aims to restore and maximize this motion just as we do in the spinal joints or any other joint in the body. However, the technique used is much gentler and more subtle. Craniosacral therapy can help with problems like headaches, neck pain or jaw pain. But it can also help with less obvious problems such as low back pain.
Great information, thanks for the share!
